Shanghai Expo Dream Upon the Huangpu River

Shanghai Expo Dream Upon the Huang-Pu River

Limited Print     2010s

After Shanghai opened as a commercial port in the early 20th century, a tide of capital got invested into the banks of Hangpu River, creating the Asian financial center called “The Bund.” 100 years later, another tide of capital got invested into another bank of the same Hangpu River, and the financial district of Lujiazui was created. This 1.7 square kilometer district, filled with a steel, concrete and glass skyline of many modern super-skyscrapers, became known as the “Pudong Lujiaqui Finance & Trade Development Zone.” Significant buildings such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Jinmao Tower, the Global Financial Center, the World Financial Tower, Aurora International, etc. are all located here.

In this poetic and symbolic painting, we see the shadows of these buildings on the Hangpu River beyond the Red Crown Gate of the China Pavilion, expressing the fruitful results of the Reforming & Opening Policy which was started thirty years ago. It seems that this painting of contracting, vibrating shadows on the water with the strong and steady Red Crown Gate is a witness of change in history and fashion. Yet what has not changed is the human will for progress, for an improved civilization and better quality of life, as expressed within this World Expo.
