Cézanne participated in the Van Gogh Art Furniture Club

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) While Van Gogh was in Paris, he befriended Cézanne, a native of Aix-en-Provence near Arles, so it was natural that he was invited to join the artists’ colony after Gauguin.

A self-portrait (1895) hanging on the wall suggests the presence of Paul Cézanne, indicating he was busy placing his two card players on the canvas.

Across the window is “Mont Saint-Victoire near Gadenne” (1886-90), a famous and popular scene that Cézanne frequently studied, exploring its geological basis in its landscape of “cylinders, cones, and spheres,” and which is reflected in his still lifes. A large mint bottle and a blue rug (1893-95) hang on the bed frame, and another still life (1867-69) sits on the table beside the window. As one of the Post-Impressionist painters, Cézanne reduced the colors on his palette in order to find a malleable order that heralded the arrival of Cubism.
