Paul Klee (1879-1940)

It is said that three goddesses guarded his cradle after his birth: painting, poetry, and music. He was a gifted young violinist. He studied painting in a classical atmosphere, yet his palette, seemingly abstract and geometric, with subtle tones and a strong sense of color, hints at faces, figures, landscapes, and his own “inventions,” reflecting Paul Klee’s vibrant and interesting personality. As Rene Crevel wrote, in his paintings we “encounter spiritual animals, wise birds, loving fish, and dreamlike designs.”

This unique artist was welcomed to the Southern Studio, where he filled it with “joyful paintings,” such as “A Hundred Flowers in Full Bloom” (1934) and “The Rich Harbour” (193). His “Senecio” (1922) shows Paul Klee contemplating a newly completed work, seen through a window.
