Paul Gauguin (1839-1906)
As one of the five attributes of T.F., Chan’s “new hieroglyphs” are quotation, appropriation, imitation, unity of time and space, and ideal pursuit. His canvases represent “hypothetical situations” as “virtual occurrences,” and he was very familiar with the postmodern process, thus inviting Paul Gauguin to join this hypothetical “Van Gogh Art Club.” He was one of the “artists-in-residence” at the Atelier du Midi and enjoyed the stay without any unpleasantness with Van Gogh.

Gauguin brought five ladies here to complete his exotic canvas “Market” (1892), while also hanging on the wall “Jacob Wrestling with an Angel” (1888), “Self-Portrait with a Halo” (1889), and “The Moon and the Earth” (1893). Through the window, we can see his “Yellow Christ” (1889).
