City Gleaners

#85051     36 x 24″

Limit Edition Print & Poster     限量版畫 & 海報

▪ J.F. Millet: “The Gleaners”, 1857. Louvre, Paris
▪ Gauguin: “And the Gold of their Bodies”, 1901. Museum d’Orsay, ParisOne of the most urbane and well-informed artists of the nineteenth century Jean Francois Millet (1814-1875), did not immediately find public favor, especially with the French middle class, who viewed his canvases, which glorified the moral superiority of hard labor, as politically revolutionary. Chen sees a deep linkage between Liberty and religious experience, and he uses a number of Millet icons to show this. In “Praying in the New Land” he took two figures from Millet’s “Angelus”, which is named after the Latin prayer recited at the start of day, noon, and end of day, and placed them in the view of the Statue of Liberty. While not religious, “City Gleaners” is a devastating commentary. Chen freely uses three peasants from another Millet, the familiar “Gleaners (1857)”.Although the colors and tonal placements of the painting are lovely, these ladies have not chanted the Angelus, nor does their work seem ennobling. They are picking up the trash of a profligate society, scavenging cans from a dump. The figure on the right carries a totebag imprinted I LOVE NEW YORK. Do they scavenge the soft drink cans to clean up the mess of litterers, or are they gleaning to have something to sell? Take your choice. The image of Liberty standing on a Classic Coke can is delicious. It can never be said that Chen’s art is without humor and imagination!

“After experiencing the jolt of the dramatic close-up vis-a-vis encounter solely with the head of the Statue, Chen’s careful exchanges become apparent: her crown, a ring of Eiffel Towers; her eyes and nose, a synthesis of both the aggressive eagle and the peaceful dove. He, in essence, completes 100 years later the message of the Statue. It now not only is the traditional image of friendship between one nation and another, but becomes in Chen’s hands a more universal concept through this new universal neo-iconographic image.”

星期日早晨,自由Sunday Morning, Liberty!

#86004     36 x 24″
限量版畫  Limited Edition Print

• Edward Hopper: “Early Sunday Morning,” 1930, Whitney Museum of American Art

In Chen’s book “The Spirit of Liberty,” he states: “The driving desire of all human beings to make choices cannot be taken away; nor can it be ceded successfully. The craving dwells innately within the heart and spirit of human beings. Whatever our circumstances, as long as we are rational, we are in Liberty’s power forever. “To celebrate the Statue of Liberty’s Centennial several years ago, Chen painted more than 100 iconographic tributes to her, “calling into service his extraordinary erudition, his effusive love for all of humankind’s varied expressions of culture over past millennia, and his passion for the eternal truth, of humankind’s universal freedom-seeking spirit.”  “Sunday Morning, Liberty!” is a quintessential American piece, which takes a popular image from Edward Hopper (1882 – 1967), who frequently took his images from stark, seedy, urban America.  Chen’s introduction of the Liberty icon in such a dramatic fashion drives home the point that even when no human beings are in view, the social context is a product of human decisions.  – Lawrence Jeppson

向太空挑戰  Challenging Free Frontiers

#86002     36 x 24″
限量版畫   Limited Edition Print
An excerpt from President Reagan’s eulogy at a memorial service for the seven Challenger astronauts at the Johnson Space Center in Houston on January 31, 1986:
“The sacrifice of your loved ones has stirred the soul of our nation and, through the pain, our hearts have been opened to a profound truth: the future is not free, the story of all human progress is one of a struggle against all odds. We learn again that this America, which Abraham Lincoln called the last best hope of man on Earth, was built on heroism and noble sacrifice. It was built by men and women like our seven star voyagers, who answered a call beyond duty, who gave more than was expected or required, and who gave it with little thought to worldly reward.   Today, the frontier is space and the boundaries of human knowledge. Sometimes, when we reach for the stars, we fall short. But we must pick ourselves up again and press on despite the pain. Our nation is indeed fortunate that we can still draw on our immense reservoirs of courage, character and fortitude – and that we are still blesses with heroes like those of the space shuttle Challenger.”

禁止吸烟及變奏 No Smoking

#90050     40″ X 30″      Serigraph     1990

T. F. Chen was commissioned in the early 90’s to create an artwork raising awareness of cancer prevention. One of the designs that Chen came up with is this “No Smoking” silkscreen in Vincent van Gogh’s trademark. Chen newly interpreted the image to fit the screenprinting process and made some modifications to communicate his message. The originality and charm of this advertisement arises in the usage of a pictorial “icon” familiar to society. Van Gogh’s “Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe” has been etched into the public consciousness. In combining the well-known image with the positive message of “No Smoking,” the painting wittily and effectively catches the spectator’s eye. It is always a delight to perceive a message conveyed through art.

The first number of this “No Smoking” serigraph edition was welcomed by the White House during President Ronald Reagan’s administration.

The lower painting is a 8-“No Smoking”-variations-in-one on canvas with repeition to enforce the effect.

梵谷歸來 Van Gogh Coming Home

#93038     24″ X 34″      Print     1990

The sublime interior of Matisse’s “Dessert, Harmony in Red” has become Van Gogh’s home, and a pattern of Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” adorns the wallpaper and tablecloth. Van Gogh’s wife, a graceful Arlesian woman, prepares dessert for the happy artist, returning home from a long day of painting under the sun.

Thus, in Chen’s adaptation, Vincent van Gogh has finally attained the family intimacy and artistic recognition which he so earnestly craved throughout his lonely life.

天下一家  World Family in Peace

#89053     127 X 150 cm     Print    1989

Chen has been inspired several times to use Matisse’s La Danse in paintings and prints, beginning with Five Races in Harmony.Having only a black and white illustration of The Dance, Chen was free to make an extraordinary dramatic interpretation that would simultaneously express his admiration for Matisse and demonstrate his own overpowering faith in the coming together of men in a united human family. His five differently colored dancers symbolize the five races. The Red Buddha sits on a multicolored circular pedestal which plays harmonic melody with the circle of dancers and the circle of fire and light behind the Buddha’s head.

畫鳶尾花 Painting Irises

30″ X 40″     Screen Print     1993

In the late 1980s, the van Gogh painting “Irises” was purchased at auction for the astronomical, record-breaking sum of $80 million. This was a historical event in the art market. Yet how could this come to pass?

As Dr. Chen’s image reveals, the painting is unfinished! Van Gogh, dressed as an artist from Holland, is seated in a sunny Arles garden, still adding dazzling, pure strokes of color to the canvas. We do not see his face, hinting perhaps that the nature of the artist is less significant than the nature of the art.

Indeed, the greatest artist of all is obscured from human vision, but with a divine hand, continues to add strokes of color to the canvas known as Earth.

舉婚於村莊之上  Wedding Above the Village

77 X 101 cm    Print     1991

The juxtaposition of complementary colors “the Chagall sky with the van Gogh landscape” excites the eye. When van Gogh painted Starry Night, he was lonely and unhappy, a victim of unrequited love who, more than anything, wished for a wife and family.

Chagall’s exuberant Song of Songs images present a wish fulfillment: love, mutual bless, and evelasting joy. Although it was impossible on the physical plane to grant van Gogh a portion of happiness, through the merging of his work wih the transcendent sweetness of Chagall’s, Chen bestows a subconscious blessing. In a time out of time, and a place out of place, van Gogh can enjoy love and peace.

愛超越對立  Love Above Confrontation

30″ X 40″    Screen Print    1993

A span of four centuries of changing values in artistic tradition electrifies the air between Titian’s “Venus with a Mirror” and Picasso’s “Seated Woman.” The contemporary viewer can see the beauty in both icons, but within their worlds, each woman argues for the authenticity of the stylistic expression of her image. Locked in a moment of confrontation, the two do not comprehend that another world exists that values and cherishes both for their differences, not in spite of them. Through an open window, Chagall’s folkloric pair of lovers float high above the fray. They seem to advocate “love above confrontation,” and are enjoying the freedom that only love can offer.

Happy Mme. Moitessier

30″ X 40″     Screen Print     1993

Between Cezanne’s still life and Gauguin’s Tahitian painting, Ingres’ “Mme. Moitessier” stands confident and serene. Her source of happiness is twofold: her portrait hangs in a museum, enchanting thousands; and she owns, within this frame of reference, two postimpressionist masterpieces. In linear time, this would be impossible, since both works were produced almost half a century after her death.

But the imagination does not recognize the boundaries of time and space. This intriguing arrangement playfully revises history and demonstrates the depth of possibility in the postmodernist art world.

1.Days in Paris (在巴黎的日子)

01_在巴黎的日子My Days in Paris_M

T.F. Chen’s diary during his study in France, titled “Days in Paris,” documents the European art trends and developments of the 1960s. The preface praises Chen’s growth experience in a foreign land, which not only reflects the collective memory of Taiwanese intellectuals studying abroad in the 1960s but also serves as an exemplary model of how an artist creates new ideas and incorporates them into a new theory.

“Days in Paris” is divided into three volumes, with over 600,000 words and 1,660 pages, featuring more than 300 illustrations. This diary is not only an indispensable primary source for studying the history of post-war Taiwanese art but also provides insights into the early thoughts of Chen’s “Neo-Iconography.” It is a natural display of Chen’s literary talent, showcasing his dual expertise in writing and painting. A book can change a person’s life.

This book chronicles the journey of a Taiwanese boy from 1930 to 2010, pursuing his dream of the world through art. It records the life of an ordinary yet self-aware individual who, in 1963, won a French government scholarship and, with just a hundred dollars, embarked alone from Taiwan to Paris, then New York, and eventually the world. This arduous journey, blending the cultures of Europe, Asia, and America, led to innovative development and bore witness to the collective ideals and challenges faced by humanity during the era of globalization from post-World War II to today.

“Life is short, art is eternal.” Using art to step onto the world stage, promoting “Art for Humanity” and a global new Renaissance, this book is written as a dream book for Taiwanese youth. (out of print)

In 1990, to commemorate the centennial of Van Gogh’s death, Dr. T.F. Chen created the “Post-Van Gogh Series,” consisting of 100 pieces in tribute to Van Gogh. The series’ representative work, “Van Gogh Returns,” is an imagined, fictional scene where Dr. Chen transforms Matisse’s “The Red Studio” into a warm family setting called “Van Gogh’s Home.” (In reality, Van Gogh led a lonely and destitute life.) In the artwork “Van Gogh Returns,” the brilliant interior from Matisse’s “The Red Studio” becomes Van Gogh’s home, with Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” decorating the wallpaper and tablecloth. Van Gogh’s wife, a graceful Arlesienne, is preparing a snack for the happy artist returning from painting under the scorching sun. In Dr. Chen’s work, Van Gogh finally receives the family warmth and artistic recognition he desperately longed for in his lonely life. This reflects an art family filled with love. This painting is uniquely featured as a color spread in the book “The Myth of Van Gogh” published by Japan’s TV ASAHI, which details Van Gogh’s life and works. Dr. Chen is known in the art world as the “Heir of Van Gogh.” In “Van Gogh Painting the Temple of Heaven,” Dr. Chen brings Van Gogh to Beijing. In this new piece, Van Gogh’s wife becomes a gentle and beautiful Chinese woman in traditional attire, with the Temple of Heaven visible outside the window. In this painting, Van Gogh and his wife share a sumptuous dinner. **Limited Edition Van Gogh Silk Scarves – Themes: “Van Gogh Returns” & “Van Gogh Painting the Temple of Heaven” –

This painting is uniquely featured as a color spread in the book “The Myth of Van Gogh” published by Japan’s TV ASAHI, which details Van Gogh’s life and works. Dr. Chen is known in the art world as the “Heir of Van Gogh.”
