Chen’s ‘Post – Van Gogh Series’ of 1990 are simply meant to amuse, the humour emerging from an amalgamation of the unlike. Chen’s Vincent Coming Home! (fig. 70) is a mundane image generated by transforming objects of great art into a scene from daily life, a typically post-Modernist form of confrontation. The basis for his composition is Matisse’s Harmony in Red (1908-09).
  • For Matisse’s woman sitting at the table, Chen has substituted Van Gogh’s Arlésienne, Madame Ginoux; instead of Matisse’s stylized flowerpots on the wallpaper and tablecloth, we see Vincent’s sunflowers; the chair in the left foreground has become Vincent’s chair, complete with his pipe and tobacco. The window at the upper left, which in Matisse’s work looked onto a very flattened, stylized landscape, is now a quotation – in mirror image – of The Painter on the Road to Tarascon. The painter, laden with materials, is returning home to the little woman at the end of a hard day’s work – a situation, in fact, that Vincent himself passionately desired. A final stage has been reached: the pilgrim Van Gogh has now become no more than a pictorial cliché.”

  • “Love Above Confrontation” The two women confront each other in a room. Each exemplifies an ideal of beauty four centuries apart. They argue about which style is authentic. Yet both styles are valid because love can overcome differences, even those of time and culture. With love, there doesn’t need to be an argument. Problems can be resolved, and mutual respect can flourish.
